Getting to Know our New Director of Applied Behavioral Analysis Mindy Rothstein, MA

Please welcome Mindy Rothstein, MA to GE&P. She’s our new Director of Applied Behavioral Analysis. Mindy will lead our practice that helps children and young adults overcome the challenges presented by Autism and related disorders such as Asperger’s Syndrome. Mindy’s expertise allows us to respond to the increasing calls from both our current client base and the communities we serve to bring evidence-based services to children on the spectrum.
Q:You’ve been busy since you started working at GE&P in January. Can you tell us what you’ve been doing and some plans you have for the future?
A: Day to day I am working with children of all ages and who have a range of diagnoses and needs. In addition, I have been working with children and young adults who have Autistic Spectrum Disorder Diagnoses (Autism, PDD, and Aspergers Syndrome). My focus in on Applied Behavorial Analysis Therapy, a B.F. Skinner methodology that stresses changing behavior within an environment using positive reinforcement. It can also be used with children who are struggling academically and socially. Each child receives individualized attention. I tailor each program to the needs of the child as well as to those of the family. In developing an appropriate plan for each client, I consider a number of factors including: will it be more beneficial for the child to work in the child’s school, home or in one of GE&P’s offices? How can the rest of the family (parents and siblings) be helped to adjust to the necessary changes that are inherent with a child diagnosed with a disability? What type of program plan will enable to child to generalize the skills he/she learns in therapy to other environments and settings?
Q: Can you tell us about the free parent workshops you’re planning?
A: More details to come, but basically I’m organizing several events for parents. You’ll be invited to come to the GE&P office one evening to hear our panel of experts speak about the best ways to discipline in the home, bedtime issues, getting your child to complete his/her homework, establishing routines that work, and teaching your child to follow your directions because you are the parent.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at GE&P?
The philosophy of GE&P falls right in line with Applied Behavior Analysis - reaching to the needs of each and every individual. That is what I believe, and I feel right at home at a place that believes in bringing out the best in every child and teaching every child individually according to his/her own needs.
